Pattinson not enough
Cricket Victoria
A record-breaking haul from rookie Victoria paceman James Pattinson was not enough to deny New South Wales four-wicket victory in an intriguing Ford Ranger Cup clash on a lively SCG wicket on Wednesday.
Defending a modest total of 188, the 19-year-old single-handedly kept the Bushrangers in the contest capturing the first six wickets of the innings to finish with the impressive figures of 6-48 from 10 overs.
Pattinson's haul was the best by a Victorian in domestic one-day internationals and the seventh finest in the history of the competition.
Playing in just his third Ford Ranger Cup fixture, the teenager removed David Warner (seven), Phil Jaques (24) and Moises Henriques (zero) in a damaging opening spell to leave the Blues precariously placed at 3-43 after 10 overs.
A steadying 52-run partnership between Usman Khawaja (56 off 104 balls) and Ben Rohrer (27 off 28) saw the Blues regain the ascendancy before Pattinson had Rohrer and Steve Smith (zero) caught behind from consecutive deliveries to leave the match evenly poised with 25 overs remaining.
Khawaja then combined with Daniel Smith (62 not out off 73) for 54 runs before becoming Pattinson's sixth victim, but the Blues gloveman finished the job in style with some lusty late hitting.
Grant Lambert (six) was the other not-out batsman when Smith struck the winning runs with five overs to spare.
Test paceman Peter Siddle (0-40 off 10) bowled with genuine pace throughout without reward and looks to have fully recovered from the hamstring complaint that kept him out of the third Test against the West Indies in Perth.
The win sees the Blues join Victoria and Western Australia on 13 points after managing three victories and three defeats from their opening three matches to sit in fifth, while the Bushrangers remain in third.
Earlier, inspired opening spells from teenage quicks Josh Hazlewood (2-27 off 10 overs) and Mitchell Starc (3-36 off 7.4) set up victory for the hosts.
Starc was first to strike removing both openers - Chris Rogers (15) and Andrew McDonald (11) - in the fifth over of the innings, but it was his fellow teenager who stole the show.
Hazlewood mesmerised the well-credentialed Bushrangers top order, repeatedly beating the bat with a dangerous combination of swing and bounce in a sublime 10-over spell of seam bowling.
Having been denied the wicket of Brad Hodge when Steve Smith grassed a chance at second slip, the 18-year-old was finally rewarded for his efforts when David Hussey (9) played all around a ball that nipped back sharply.
After several near misses, Hazlewood's luck turned when Hodge (11) was ruled to have gloved a delivery that followed him down the leg side despite appearing to miss by some margin.
The Blues moved further on top when leg-spinner Steve Smith (1-37) trapped Matthew Wade lbw for 10 before Henriques (2-20) removed Cameron White (15) caught at cover to leave the visitors in deep trouble before John Hastings (38 off 49) and Aaron Finch (37 off 51) combined for 65-runs for the seventh wicket.
But it was too little too late.
